OFDA NEWS: November 2008 Internet Shoot
Christmas Promise
You made outdoors thy temple Lord, to fit our simple prayer that Christmas time may touch the hearts of all men everywhere. With thine own brand of mercy, human kindness and the best, of good old freedom feelin's that we hold to in the West.
Don't let no hearts feel hopeless Lord no matter who they are. Help them look up for comfort to the Promise of the Star. We ask no special favors Lord except to hope you'll bless, the friends and kin whom we hold dear with Christmas happiness.
1966, S. Omar Barker

OFDA NEWS: October 2008 Internet Shoot
Gunfighters of Scotland
Calton Kid on the left and BJ Colt on the right.
For me it is the people and their stories that make Fast Draw a sport worthy of recognition and in that spirit I am dedicating the October Internet shoot to our sister and brother gunfighters in Scotland. They shot several videos to share with those of us who shoot here at GunFighter Gulch. Like us they shoot for fun and by the looks of it they are accomplishing their goal.
For years I was aware that there were Fast Draw gunfighters in the United Kingdom but it wasn't until I stumbled across the Western Round Up Forum that I had the opportunity to communicate with them directly. The fact that Fast Draw still exists in the UK is amazing considering how restrictive their gun laws are. As you can see by the videos they are limited to practicing the sport with partially blocked barrel or side venting blank guns. To increase the challenge guns in that class are not as durable as the single actions available to us in the United States. Still the sport lives and has the potential to thrive based on my forum discussions with the gunfighters in Scotland.
Through my online chats with BJ Colt (host of the the Western Round Up), Pat Garrett, Dakota Rose and Southern Star the thought of an International Internet Shoot started brewing. I pointed my Texas gunfighter buddy, DT Lledslinger, to their website and he facilitated a meeting with Me, BJ and Pat on his internet radio program the Alamo Fast Draw Show to discuss it further as well as the history of Fast Draw in Scotland. TD Campbell, Johnny Perry and Neva Brett have have already posted their support of the International Internet Shoot on the Western Round Up's "Our Friends From Across the Pond" thread. I am hoping all of you will take the time to do the same and extend goodwill to our fellow gunfighters.
So let's hear it shooters!... are you up for a shootout with our fellow gunfighters across the Pond? If so please visit the Western Roundup site and voice your support directly to our gunfighter friends in Scotland. I figure if we shoot 3 sets of balloons at close distance using only shotgun primers that would put us on level playing field with them and make for a fair match. I'm suggesting a New Years Shoot starting off 2009 with a BANG!
For all you OFDA gunfighters I encourage you to also participate in a bit of history called the OFDA Winter Mail In Shootout. In a time before the Internet the OFDA would hold matches during the winter by mail. Events would be picked and shooters would send their times via the US Postal Service. There is a small fee of $5.00 per entry with $1.00 going to the OFDA and the rest will be used to pay for awards and shipping. You can enter a maximum of 2 times between now and January 31, 2009. Good luck shooters!
For the November Internet Shoot let's shoot for fast times... say 3 sets of S/W @ 5'. Remember to wear your safety glasses!

OFDA NEWS: September Internet Shoot
Jim Martin's Tribute to Tim McCoy
Alex Gomes, Bruce Begg and I just got back from visiting Jim Martin at his ranch in Kingman, AZ. Bruce refinished Jim's Tim McCoy replica rig to compliment the tribute Colt that Jim created. Alex and I worked on a film project that we hope to share with you soon.
I apologize for the delay in posting the September Internet Shoot results. Over the last few weeks I was unable to update the site due to repeated attacks by hackers. While I was able to finally repair the damage to the Gulch those who have been visting me for a while know this is not the first time this has happened. As a result I've decided to give up and shut down the current version of GunFighter Gulch.
The good news is that I have also been working on a website upgrade this past few months and I should have it online sometime in November.
In the mean time let's shoot some events from the upcoming OFDA Georgia State Championship in Calhoun, GA on October 18 and 19, 2008 for the October Internet Shoot. One set of Standing Wax @ 8', one set of Standing Wax at 10' and a set of Step Back/Step Up Wax 5' - 8' - 10' - 8' - 5'. Here in California we'll be shooting it at WFDA Area 5 Vice Chairman Dan Qualls range in Oakdale.
In closing I'd like to congratulate the members of my club, The Sundowners, for their excellent performance at CFDA contests this year, especially at the CFDA Beretta Fastest Gun World Championship last weekend in Fallon, Nevada. Sundowner Ken Gentry came 1st followed by fellow Sundowners James Barney in 2nd and Gary Wagner in 3rd. They had to shoot through a field of 77 gunfighters to get to the top. Throughout the past year Sundowners have been placed in the top 10 at every major Cowboy Fast Draw Association match that they attended. Further Ken won the Worlds, Francis won the Nationals and Jim won The Showdown at Winter Range as well as last years California State Championship. Good work Gunfighters!

OFDA NEWS: August Internet Shoot
Are you ready for the Whole Dang Shootin' Match?
Update 9/16/08 - I was blinded by the massive amount of incoming data and left out 3 of my favorite gunfighters (Johnny Perry, TD Campbell and Laura Campbell) from the first set of results I posted yesterday. I corrected my error and fall on my bowie knife begging for mercy from the rest of you who were affected by my mistake. That is all.
45 gunfighters from California, Arizona, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois showed up at the Gulch for the August Internet Shoot. It was great to see my Arizona gunfighter friends Mickey and Drew Wright back in the mix again.
The Golden State Gunslingers are putting on a gunfight in Los Banos on October 10 - 12, 2008. They're calling this shootout "The Whole Dang Shootin' Match" and it consists of 3 days of cowboy shootin' fun during the 2nd Annual Henry Miller Wild West Weekend celebration at the Merced County Spring Fairgrounds, 403 F St., Los Banos, CA 93635. Details are on their websites:
Their main match is a 21' elimination contest and I'll be in it so I need the practice. Since we can't get 21' in most of your home ranges, including mine, let's shoot 3 sets of S/W at 15' for the September Internet competition.
Shoot the events anytime between now and the end of the month but hold off on sending the times to me until the last week in September so they don't get lost in the tons of email I receive.
It really works well for me that most of you send in your times on the Excel spreadsheet I have available in the Downloads section of the Gulch. If you don't have Microsoft Excel you can download a free office suite called OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org). OpenOffice will allow you to create, open and modify Microsoft Excel spreadsheet files and Microsoft Word documents.
