CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT
I would like to wish everyone in our fast draw family a very Happy New Year and a successful shooting season for 2007. We had quite a crowd at our house for the official counting of the ballots. The results are published in this newsletter. Congratulations to all of the new officers and I will be happy to help them in any way that I can.
The Western Division is having their first OFDA contest this month and have picked up quite a few new members. Hopefully our association will continue to grow. We all need to work to promote our sport where and when we can.
I’ve enjoyed my term as Chairperson and will continue to serve the association in any capacity that I can.

Ramblings of:
North Vice Chairman
It is almost time to begin another year with fast draw. Some new rules, some new officers, and most important, some new members.
We have all worked together to make this great year for all to enjoy. There is a list of contests for the North and South, and it looks like a busy year. I know that everyone cannot make every contest, but do you’re best so each has a good attendance. Nothing looks better to a sponsor than a great turn out. This makes the sponsor want to go bigger and better for the next time.
See you at the contests!
Good job, Rich, for Sportsman of the year. You were always ready to fill in anytime help was needed at any contest. The shooters have spoken their thanks for you’re help.
Dale

A word to:
South Vice Chairman
I would like to apologize to Billy; I felt I could no longer hold up the bulletin. It is important for the membership to receive the results of the election, by the end of this month.
Billy, I know that you have been very busy, and I am sure that the Southern Division is working on their shooting schedule for the year.
I wish the Southern officers are the best of luck for 2007, and if I can be of any assistance to you, please let me know
Once again, Billy I am sorry I could no longer wait.

A Word from:
West Vice Chairman
Howdy to my fellow OFDA members!
Where does the time go? Sue tells me it’s time for another Vice Chairman’s report and since the year just started there’s not much to tell out here in the remote OFDA outpost we call the Western Division. While our membership is small we still maintain the hope that we can show the western states what fun OFDA style Fast Draw can be and grow our membership.
To that end we have been practicing for the “Best of the West” contest hosted by the Arizona Shootists Inc. and the Sundowners. By the time you read this the contest will be history. Traveling with me are Sundowners George Narasaki, Will York, Jim Odom, and Charles Gilmer. I am looking forward to getting together with my friends and fellow OFDA members Tom Depuy, James Barney, Tracie and Mickey Wright for two days of competition at Pioneer Living History Village in Phoenix Arizona. A special Thanks goes out to Tom Depuy for the hard work he put in to secure a genuine 1800’s western town for our inaugural gunfight. Tom designed a challenging contest for the first Western Division OFDA sanctioned Arizona State Championship including doubles at 10’ and step back wax to 25’. This should be FUN and a real test of our sixgun skills! In attendance as special guests will be Fast Draw veterans Jim Martin and Wes Flowers. Marshall Hopper, Membership Director for the Cowboy Fast Draw Association, will also be there to conduct the CFDA Range Officer Training class at the Pioneer Opera House on Friday January 19. I will be bringing my camera and will write up a story about the contest for the next edition of the Bulletin.
Here in California I am in conversation with Dan Qualls, WFDA Vice Chairman for Area 5, with the hopes of co-hosting an event at some time towards the end of 2007. Some of you who attended Gary and Joyce Tryon’s shoot last March may have had the pleasure of meeting Dan. I have always enjoyed his company and respect him as a shooter. Those of you, like me, that are members of both the OFDA and the WFDA know that there has been a change in leadership within the WFDA this past year. To say the very least the WFDA is in for a challenging year ahead of them.
Considering the current state of affairs with Fast Draw in Northern California I am hoping Dan and I can work out something agreeable that will benefit both our organizations as each of us attempt to rekindle interest in the traditional style Fast Draw that both our Associations enjoy. Some of you may be asking why would I do that? The truth of the matter is that while I believe the OFDA is the family environment I was looking for in Fast Draw, if it wasn’t for the WFDA I would not have found Fast Draw when I went looking for it in 1999. Now that the OFDA has opened up the Western Division I am inspired by my OFDA friends Larry Atcheson, Jim Donaldson, Sue and Ron Zimmerman, Susie and Dale Searls and Ron Paul Duning to promote our organization out here but Tom and I still have friends in the WFDA and we cannot sit idly by without trying to help them. While the OFDA is the organization we chose to support primarily, I think there is room for both organizations. I may be wrong but only time will tell. If I can’t work something out with the WFDA the worst that will happen is I will shift my efforts to hosting OFDA only events. I have heard concerns that, in the past, co-sanctions with the WFDA required the contest be run under WFDA rules. I can assure the OFDA membership that if the Sundowners commit to hosting the contest on our home range that it is my intention to run the contest under OFDA rules since we will be doing a majority of the work to make the contest a success. When the Sundowners host a shoot we intend to make it memorable to all who attend and we want to attract the very best shooters from both associations if possible. We have great beginning with our home range in beautiful California Gold Rush Country, which is rich in western history, and has plenty of interesting family activities to enjoy. I am also hoping that by planning the contest late in the year that it might give some of you time to plan a little year-end vacation out here to sunny California to shoot with us. More details as we move forward in the planning process.
I wish all the newly elected OFDA officials good luck and I look forward to working with all of you to make the Ohio Fast Draw Association a success.
Regards,
Greg Custodio
In this bulletin I am profiling the Northern Division’s “Sportsman of the year” and his son.
Rich and Philip “Sparky” Enneper.
I was delighted to see that Rich won Sportsman of the year, because no one is more deserving of the title. Rich helps out all he can at the matches. Doesn’t matter if he is north or south, Rich helps in setting up, keeping score, timer operator, line judge, and tear down. Rich is definitely one of the great guys in our sport.
The Ennepers have been in Fast Draw for three years. And they are members of the Buckeye Rangers Fast Draw Club. Rich had taken a gun to Gander Mountain, and none other than our own Ron Paul, worked on it. Duning invited the Ennepers to come and try their hand at our sport. They did, and got hooked. They practice once or twice a week with the Rangers.
The first couple of years, we didn’t see much of Rich and Sparky. Rich was busy starting up the Medina Mitsubishi dealership, where he is parts manager. But in 2006, they attended every contest north and south. Except for Alabama, Sparky chose to skip, because his grades were down in school, and he made a promise to Dad, that they would be brought up. He brought them up, but not on the time schedule he had promised. So he chose to stay home. If he is the future of our sport, we will be just fine!
Rich and Sparky enjoy fast draw very much, they feel they have formed some very good friendships. Rich will tell you “everyone is always willing and ready with advise and help”. Rich enjoys watching many of our shooters, Ron Paul Duning, Harry Ballengee, Ron Zimmerman, Jim Yurasek, and the late Phil “Fireball” McNaughton, they are inspirations. Sparky’s inspiration is “John Wayne”. Rich enjoys shooting the wax events, at a close distance, doesn’t like them at long distance, and hates blanks. That may be because of 2004 Northcoast National Gunslingers Championship, hosted by the Buckeye Rangers, Rich lit up the floor, in the blank event. WAY TO GO – RICH!
Sparky loves everything about Fast Draw, and has really improved. He is a natural thumber, but he hates it when he misses. At the 2006 Northern Divisions Year End, in Gibsonburg, he took second place in the Thumbing Championship. I tip my hat to him!
Rich has showed some improvement, but right now he feels it is more important to hit, and that speed will eventually come. He is concentrating on enjoying himself, getting his style down, and spending time with his son. Rich very much wants to learn how to set up the guns for Fast Draw. His other hobbies are archery, golf and motorcycles. Sparky’s hobbies are shooting, and spending time with his friends, and of course, Dad.
What would the Ennepers tell a new shooter? Enjoy the contests, don’t worry about the times, when you first start out, and it can be fairly expensive to start, but is a great investment. Their family and friends are very interested in what they are doing, and want to learn more about it.
Rich and Sparky have not started any new shooters, but have helped as much as possible with the new members of the Buckeye Rangers, Tom, Maren, and Tyler Roberts, Wendy Delisio, Paul Elliot, and Darius Barnes.
When I asked how the Buckeye Rangers got it’s name, Rich was unsure, but Sparky, piped right up with “we are in Ohio, and we are cowboys”!
Sparky was kind enough to take the 50/50 drawing off my hands, at the Annie Oakley Days contest, held in Greenville, Oh, in July of ’06. He has done a terrific job, not only as my replacement, but also for the association. He tells me it’s because he tells everyone, that I’ll hurt him, if he doesn’t do well.
Rich and Philip are real assets to our Association. To you both, I say: I am honored to call you my friends, and am so glad you have joined our family!
To Rich I say, “Congratulations – Sportsman of the Year!
I SALUTE you both!
GREETINGS FROM THE NORTH COAST;
I WISH TO THANK ALL OF THE O.F.D.A. MEMBERSHIP FOR THE 2006 SEASON OF COMPETITIONS, SHOWS, PUBLIC PROMOTIONS, AND MEDIA INVOLVEMENT.
THE SPORT OF FAST DRAW IS ONCE AGAIN BECOMING A STRONGER FAMILY. WITH THE NATIONWIDE EXPANSION, NORTH, SOUTH, AND WESTERN DIVISIONS ADDING MANY NEW SHOOTERS, AND INVOLVING YOUNGER MEMBERS, THIS IS OUR FUTURE OF FAST DRAW.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE 2007 O.F.D.A OFFICERS, AND A HEARTY THANKS TO ALL THE 2006 OFFICERS, WHO WORKED SO HARD, AND ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH.
AS THE NEW VICE CHAIRMAN OF THE NORTHERN DIVISION, I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING CLOSELY WITH DALE, BILLY, AND GREG, AS WELL AS WITH ALL OF YOU, TO HELP MAKE THE 2007 SEASON A FANTASTIC YEAR. MY THANKS FOR YOUR CONFIDENCE IN ME.

PROPOSALS FOR 2007
Passed
1. Under Article XXI – Section 14. Eliminate this section. Drop the practice of dropping any
contests. Reason being: Contests being held seems to be down and every contest should be
considered an important one. Because of the North, South, West Divisions, it is the shooters
choice as to how many contests they want to attend or are able to attend in each Division.
Submitted by: Sue Zimmerman
Failed
2. Change the one-second penalty to one and one-half seconds
Submitted by: Ed Shaddix
Passed
3. Article XXII: Equipment Section 4: When using lithium grease, the front edge of the target must
show a half moon to be called a hit.
Reason: Too many missed calls and some hard feelings between shooters because somebody
gets a hit and there is no visible mark on the front of the target. The line officer should be able to
overrule the hand judge on this call if there is not a half moon hit on the front of the target.
Submitted by: Jim Yurasek
Passed
4. Article VII Membership Section 6. Change to read:
The age limit for membership as the Jr. member is 10 years. Jr. Membership is open to ages
10 to 17 providing the parent or sponsor is a member in good standing. The Jr. Member has all
rights and privileges except the right to hold office. The parent or sponsor is directly responsible
for all actions of the Jr. member. Dues for Jr. members shall be $7.50 and $25.00 insurance if he
or she is not part of a family membership
Submitted by: Susie Searls and Carol Bonnett
Failed
5. Change Ohio Fast Draw Association (OFDA) to
Ohio Fast Draw Association dba Fast Draw America (FDA).
Reason: We encompass several states and our current name does not indicate what we really are.
Submitted by: Harry Ballengee
Failed
6. If the proposal to change OFDA to FDA passes then we would issue a one time membership
card that would have a line for member number. Any current member and any new members for
the first year would be charter members with the letter C preceeding their membership number.
Example: Charter member number would be Cxxx. Any member number after the first year
would be xxx.

John Phillips - A Fast Draw Legend
By Greg Custodio
John Phillips passed away on January 5, 2007. Anyone with even a casual interest in the 50+-year history of Fast Draw knows his name and understands what a significant loss this is for the sport. The Cambridge Dictionary defines legend as a noun describing someone or something very famous, usually because of their ability in a particular area. That definition is fitting, as John Phillips is truly a legend in the world of Western Fast Draw. Many consider him one of the best Fast Draw gunsmiths that ever lived and today a Phillips Fast Draw gun still commands a price of $1000 or more if you can find an owner willing to part with one.
One of my personal Fast Draw mentors, Jim Martin, wrote me when he heard the news of Mr. Phillips passing:
“John was a good friend to me for more years than I care to remember. He was a unique man. When I moved to Arizona he gave me a welcome present, a stainless steel cylinder that he built for the Colt SAA that I won at the 1961-1962 California State Fast Draw Championship. I still shoot that gun today. I always thought that he knew more about Rugers than Bill Ruger did. I remember a phone conversation I had with John about 10 years ago when he was in his 80's. He was complaining that he had been to a Fast Draw shoot and what bothered him was that he was having trouble getting below .39”.
The January 1979 issue of the World Fast Draw Association Newsletter featured John Phillips on the cover and it was accompanied by a brief story:
“Featured this month is one of the most noted members in the sport…. From Phoenix, Arizona, meet John Phillips. I’ve known John a number of years, and yet…. I don’t know much about him other than he’s quite proficient in all styles of shooting, and if you ever compete against him he’ll give you a run for your money. John’s been involved in Fast Draw since 1970. I use the word involved because not only is he a fierce competitor, and a darn good gunsmith, but he also makes and designs the best Fast Draw equipment around. In short, John’s one of the few shooters that is not only a competitor, but a contributor as well.”
And contribute he did. He manufactured custom gun parts - cylinders, barrels, hammers, triggers, and springs that he and many other Fast Draw gunsmiths used to build their guns. To the best of my knowledge he was the first Fast Draw gunsmith to build guns using one of the most difficult materials to machine, titanium, to build cylinders and barrels because of their lightweight and superior strength. He built targets and custom stainless steel shells for wax shooting that accommodated shotgun primers and .22 blanks. With the help of his son in law, Dan Lindsey, he built a competition Fast Draw timer that you still find in use today.
Always innovative and looking for maximum performance he constantly tinkered with guns to eek as much speed out of them as possible. In 1978 Bob Arganbright wrote in his book The Fastest Guns Alive – The Story of Western Fast Draw, “The latest development is the conversion of the Ruger Single Six to 9mm Parabellum caliber. Custom fast draw gunsmith John Phillips of Phoenix, Arizona, first makes a new stainless steel cylinder. He then replaces the original barrel with a 357 Ruger barrel turned to fit. The firing pin assembly is removed, the frame is welded up, and a new center firing pin is installed. This gives one a beautiful, small, lightweight, single action revolver in the potent 9mm Luger caliber.”
In the April 1993 issue of The Newsletter the Official Journal of the World Fast Draw Association, Inc. V.R. “Bob” Huber Sr. wrote John Phillips – Gunsmith, Machinist, Competitor:
“I’ve known John Phillips for over 20 years. My son and I have had the honor and pleasure of owning several Phillips built Fast Draw guns. I’ve had the pleasure of spending some time with this man. Recently I was invited to watch this “super machinist” work in his two car garage, which is crammed with 10 to 15 machines, lathes, drill presses, etc. John had his 80th birthday in November of 1991, and to watch him run these machines like a young man 1/3 his age leaves me amazed beyond my comprehension. If that wasn’t enough, to see him shoot Fast Draw pulling .32’s and .34’s, Traditional Style, is beyond compare, and he can still twist fan in the upper 20’s. John has been having quite a bit of pain from arthritis the past few years and due to injuries throughout his 80 years I’m sure he has many reasons to quit the sport of Fast Draw but I’m more likely to quit before he will!!! During my visit with John in his shop he continued to amaze me with his micrometers, checking the different measurements on my gun before every cut or grind. He kept every cut or grind clean by blowing the shavings away before they could cause any slight change and then re-oiled before the next cut. John is very fussy about his work and to show how fussy he is, I made the mistake of sending him one of my guns that wasn’t as clean as he thought it should be, and let me tell you, I still have the letter of reprimand I received. I’ll never make that mistake again. I don’t remember the first time I met John but it had to be at a contest, probably with another amazing gentleman by the name of E.L. “Pop” Warner of whom most older shooters will remember with great respect and love. Bless Him!! John has been very helpful in promoting the sport of Fast Draw and has probably started more shooters in the sport than any other shooter in one way or another. I started Fast Draw in November of 1957 and still learn something when I shoot with or against John. I can’t think of anyone I would rather shoot with. John was born in Burly, Idaho where he lived for 17 years, then he moved to Oregon and then to California before settling in Arizona. He has more than a year left on his latest endeavor as a missionary for the Mormon Church. Lately, he has time for little else since he puts as much into this project as anything else he puts his mind to. We’ll all look forward to seeing John and his wife, Helena, back on the Fast Draw circuit when he has finished his task. We miss him.”
A six-gun salute to you Mr. Phillips. The sport of Fast Draw is forever in your debt.
